As the Geraldine Roche Arts Academy (GRAA) Level 1 trainees near the completion of their skills training, focus has shifted to one of the most critical components of film production, editing.
This week, students actively participated in hands-on editing practicals, working in small groups to apply the knowledge gained throughout their training.
Editing is often referred to as the “final rewrite” of a film, where the story truly comes together. For the GRAA students, mastering this skill is vital, as they are expected to independently produce a short film as their final project. The practicals allowed them to explore timing, pacing, sound syncing, transitions, and visual storytelling, crucial tools that
can make or break a viewer’s experience.
"This stage of the process demands both creativity and technical precision," noted Gugulethu, one of the trainees. “It’s where their artistic vision becomes tangible."
With the upcoming film showcase just around the corner, the trainees are rising to the challenge, piecing together stories that reflect both their growth and potential as future filmmakers.
