Poultry Rearing: A Doorway to Development Opportunities

The major objective of the ZDDT/ Sally Foundation gardens it to simply improve access to food, enhance nutrition and generate income at household and community level.

With crop farming fully developed and, with a vision of expansion, the Sizinda community garden has ventured into poultry farming.

Sizinda Garden received 100 broiler birds to kick start the project, and a special thank you goes out to Chematek Lubricants for kindly providing transportation of the stainless-steel prep table to the site.

There was much excitement in the garden as beneficiaries were thankful stating that this would propel the garden to new heights.

Chairman, Mr. Njiva, remarked "We are looking forward to adding meat to our diet. This is also a good development for the business, and we should look beyond just rearing the chickens. If all goes well, we should open up a kiosk to serve all those public transporters as an example, because we have everything needed to do so in the garden. We already plant vegetables such as onions, carrots, tomatoes etc. in the garden. Now we do have chickens, so everything will be fresh and will draw in customers."

The chicken project is a positive addition to the programme as it has a quick income turnover and the added benefit of increased protein intake.

ZDDT promotes entrepreneurship and self-help as foundation policies of its community interventions.
