From Beetroot to Bites: Gardeners Turn Harvest into Crisps and Refreshing Drinks
- Written by: Nozibusiso Sivalo

In a determined step toward innovation and sustainability, market gardeners at Sizinda Green Gardens are embracing new possibilities that go beyond traditional farming, signalling a promising shift in how community gardens create value and opportunity.
Gardeners are enthusiastically and creatively expanding their income-generating activities through innovative value addition, following a highly engaging and practical training session led by Mrs Van.
The hands-on training beautifully introduced the artful production of crispy, golden snacks and vibrant beetroot-based products, including freshly pressed, richly coloured beetroot juice, equipping gardeners with valuable and transformative skills to turn their harvests into appealing, nutritious, market-ready goods.
This exciting initiative is expected to significantly boost market opportunities, effectively reduce post-harvest losses, and sustainably increase household incomes, while confidently empowering gardeners, especially women, to diversify their livelihoods and tap into new and promising local markets.
