ZDDT Launches Experimental Potato Trial

The Zimbabwe Development Democracy Trust (ZDDT) has launched an experimental agriculture initiative at Hlanganani Garden aimed at improving potato yields through evidence-based farming.

The project, which has generated excitement among local growers, seeks to test and compare the effectiveness of chemical inputs versus organic methods in real-time field conditions.

The trial involves two adjacent potato beds; one treated with conventional Nature’s Guard; a natural plant bio-stimulant that improves root and plant growth and the other left completely organic. Gardeners, supported by ZDDT’s agri-extension team, are meticulously monitoring germination, leaf development, pest presence, and soil moisture levels in each bed.

The initiative is designed to measure how chemical interventions compare with organic practices under identical conditions, offering farmers clear, practical insights into which method produces healthier, stronger crops.

Early observations show promising contrasts that could significantly shape future urban farming approaches locally.

Garden leaders and participating farmers are documenting growth patterns weekly, with ZDDT extension officers capturing data on plant germination, canopy density, and tuber formation. Once harvested, the potatoes will be weighed and compared to determine the most productive and cost-effective method for smallholder gardeners.

The results are expected to help Hlanganani Garden and potentially other ZDDT-supported gardens across Bulawayo adopt farming strategies that increase yield, strengthen food security, and boost incomes for local households.
