Zimbabwe children's supplementary feeding scheme celebrates first anniversary
Written by Lewis Jones, ZDDT Field Correspondent Monday, 10 October 2011 12:48
BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE – This was indeed a memorable occasion and the culmination of the hard work put in by several well-wishers, who have over previous months, assisted the Burombo Feeding Scheme.

The initiative involves giving care to disadvantaged neighbourhood children infected and affected by HIV / AIDS. This entails not only feeding them but also ensuring that they have access to a good education.
The colourful event, which was organised to celebrate the Scheme’s first anniversary, was attended by stakeholders, among who were several dignitaries, notably the Senator for Makokoba Constituency, Hon. Matson Hlalo.

Cllr. Mackenzie J. Sibanda, in whose Ward 8 the charitable initiative operates, attended in his official capacity and as a long standing supporter of the programme.
A well known development partner from Germany, who has done a commendable job in supplying food-stuffs to the Scheme and assisted some children to access a quality education, were also present. Incidentally, it was through the Trust’s linkage interventions that this donor established its
lasting relationship with the Burombo initiative.
The operations of this scheme are run by a committee of voluntary workers based at the dilapidated Burombo Hostels, Mzilikazi Township. Several of these people are themselves, victims of the same debilitating pandemic that affects the children for whom they care.
Dignitaries and benefactors represented gave motivational speeches, while those who spoke for the beneficiaries responded with a discourse of appreciation.
With speechifying complete the real fun for the children swung into action with drama shows, music and dancing. One performer later said; “In spite of the fact that we have put on this show free of charge, it is the most rewarding performance in which I have participated. The look of pure joy on children’s faces brings immense gratification for most community based artistes like us.”
To cap this eventful occasion, Burombo’s children were treated to a specially prepared meal that included meat, a rare delicacy for them. The meal, accompanied by fresh fruit, was washed down with cordials of different flavours.
The meal, which should have signalled the events conclusion, was however, followed by impromptu fun filled activity by various participants.
Nevertheless, when all was said and done, it was the warm feeling of joy and gratification that lingered on with those who had the privilege to be part of this enjoyable happening.
