Bulawayo Ward 28 Councillor leads Cowdray Park residents in clean-up
Written by Lewis Jones, ZDDT Field Correspondent Monday, 21 November 2011 15:42
BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe – Cllr. Collet Ndlovu has joined the growing ranks of local leaders in motivating residents to participate in the conducting of clean-ups in their respective neighbourhoods. Due to a prior engagement, the Councillor did not attend but his representative at the event, Mr. Vusa Charles, oversaw proceedings.Mr. Charles said that the clean-up was necessitated by the inability of the Local Authority to effectively provide this service, due to serious financial constraints of recent years. The campaign involved removal of illegal refuse dumps which had proliferated in the Township. Mr. Charles related how Cllr. Ndlovu managed to persuade the Municipality to make a Council Lorry and driver available for the exercise. Judging from the grand turn-out at the occasion, there was an enthusiastic response to the call to residents for assistance.
Of late, local Councillors have been expressing concern about the Authorities inability to provide a timely refuse removal programme in the townships. Utilising skills, tools and equipment they had acquired in the Trust’s SEBENZELA / Work for … Programme to run these campaigns, impressive results have been achieved. A well established development partner, with whom ZDDT enjoys excellent relations, provides financial support to the initiative.
